This Kitten Fits Right In

Dog rescue volunteer Shelly Gomez of Hawthorne California got more than she bargained for after she bailed a mama Chihuahua mix and her five newborn pups out of the shelter for Noah's Bark.

So did mama dog, who wound up adopting a newborn kitten to nurse along with her pups.

About a week after Gomez brought the mother dog - nicknamed "Jolie" for the actress known for adopting children - Gomez received a call from the same shelter in South Los Angeles asking her to pick up more newborn pups.

"While I was picking up these (other) day-old puppies (that went to another foster home), there's a cat screaming and they said, `Do you want it?'

"I really don't know anything about cats, but I knew what the alternative was - they were going to euthanize it," she said. "So I took the kitten home and when I walked in the door, the mom (dog) greeted me and was jumping up, trying to grab the kitten out of my arms. ... She was so excited."

Worried that the dog might hurt the kitten, Gomez slowly let the dog sniff the feline that had been dropped at the shelter in a cardboard box.

"She just kept cleaning it and cleaning it," she said. "So I put the kitten in the (dogs') box and the kitten started nursing. The rest is history."
The tiny black-and-white, blue-eyed kitten now snoozes and suckles right alongside her chubby puppy littermates as "mom" grooms and looks after them all.

After they are vaccinated and receive spay/neuter surgeries, the dogs will be ready to be put up for adoption in about six weeks, Gomez said.

Noah's Bark, based in Manhattan Beach, holds weekly mobile adoptions at the Petco at the Crossroads shopping center at Lomita and Crenshaw boulevards from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
"She's an excellent mom," Gomez said of Jolie. "She takes such good care of all of them. She's so nurturing."

But the mom is malnourished and needs some nurturing herself, Gomez said, adding that the dog, ready to give birth, was brought in by a household that had too many dogs that had not been spayed or neutered.

"She's an older mom, she's at least five years and maybe is eight or nine years old," Gomez said.

The male kitten - who is now able to take some solid food as well as continuing to nurse - will also be neutered and be passed on to one of Gomez's friends who does kitten rescue to find a permanent home.

For now, the babies aren't doing much beyond the basics.

"They're still too young to play," Gomez said. "Every once in a while the kitten will put her paw up on them, but all they do now is eat, poop and sleep. In another week or two I'll have my hands full."

The kitten is fitting right in, she said.

"I don't think they know any difference," she said. "The kitten always seems to be in the middle of the whole group, sleeping right in the middle of the pile."

Along Comes Johnny Strange..Living Up to His Name

Photobucket

An 18-year-old Malibu, California man will face criminal charges for surfing up Pacific Coast Highway on top of a BMW SUV on the way to school Wednesday.

"I guess I was being stupid," said Johnny Strange said as he was confronted by traffic officers in a hallway at Malibu High School Wednesday.

A passenger in an city bus took photos Wednesday of Strange standing atop a BMW cruising through Malibu.

The photos showed a teenager climbing out the passenger window and standing on the car as it moved with other traffic, in a 50 mile per hour zone.

One photo showed him kneeling on the roof of the moving car, his arms outstretched sideways.

The bus passenger e-mailed them to the sheriff's department, which has a program of sending deputies to talk to youthful drivers who are observed driving unsafely, and their parents.

Riding outside a car is an infraction, and the county attorney's office was being consulted by sheriff's deputies to see if any charges can be filed.

The 17-year-old driver and will probably be cited for reckless driving and violating her provisional drivers license, which does not allow her to carry a passenger -- inside or outside her car.

Fox cub found stuck inside wheel in England

A lorry driver at a gas depot in Grangemouth found the 10-week-old fox after hearing yelping coming from a pile of tires stored at the site.

The male cub's head was wedged inside a small hole in the wheel hub.

The SSPCA's Jennifer Hamilton took the wheel, with the fox stuck inside, back to the charity's Middlebank rescue centre where the animal was released.

Ms Hamilton said: "After a short time in the back of my van, which was nice and dark and quiet, he calmed right down and staff at our wildlife rescue centre were able to release him without too much trouble.

"Apart from being a little bit shaken up, he was unharmed and quickly became very active and wild as soon as he was free, which is a really good sign.

"Staff at the depot have spotted mum and her cubs in the area before, so it looks like this little guy got stuck and was left behind."

Wildlife rescue centre manager Colin Seddon said the cub was lucky to have been discovered and would have died otherwise.

"He was a little bit unsteady after we released him from the tyre so we kept him in for observation.

"We've now introduced him to two other fox cubs in our care and we are hopeful that they will all be released when they are at the right age and stage to be able to fend for themselves in the wild."

JOKE: Bubba was walking through a town one day when he saw a shop

chicken dance
Bubba was walking through a town one day when he saw a shop with a notice in the window. The notice said "We sell everything." Bubba could not believe this so he went inside.

He walked to the counter and asked the salesperson, "Do you really sell everything?" The salesperson said "Yes, everything". Thinking this was too good to be true Bubba said "OK then could I have a sweater for a chicken?" The salesperson said "A sweater for a chicken? Hold on I will have to check the stock out the back."

Five minutes later, the salesperson returned with a brown paper bag. "Here you go, one sweater for a chicken" "How much?" asked Bubba. "Three dollars." replied the salesperson. "Three dollars for a sweater for a chicken - excellent." said Bubba.

So away he went as happy as can be. When he got outside he thought to himself that maybe he should check out his purchase, so he looked inside the bag. At the bottom of the bag was a condom. He was mad and stormed back into the shop. He screamed at the salesperson "Hey, I asked you for a sweater for a chicken and you have given me a condom - what s going on?" The salesperson replied, "Sorry buddy, I checked in the back and we seem to be all out of chicken sweaters all we had left was cock pullovers."
