A Smithfield man allegedly stole cash from his ex-girlfriend after she offered to pay for his prescription medication and then fled from the retail store where the robbery occurred on a motorized cart, all while he was clothed in a hospital gown.

State police said Craig Owen David Jr., 32, was charged Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Joseph M. George Jr. with robbery and disorderly conduct following the bizarre incident in the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot Tuesday evening.

According to Cpl. Chuck Frey, the incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when David's ex-girlfriend, Misty Shriver of Smithfield, apparently met him at Wal-Mart to give him money to purchase a prescription.

Trooper Ozzie Mills said that when Shriver pulled out a $10 bill to give to David, he grabbed the cash as well as two $20 bills and then fled from her.

Advertisement Frey said that Shriver went to an employee and reported that she had been robbed, however David, who had been released from a local hospital earlier in the day, was making his getaway across the parking lot on a motorized scooter for disabled customers that is owned by store.

The incident comes just four days after David was charged with simple assault and harassment following an altercation with his parents, Craig David Sr. and Darla David, at a residence on Morgantown Road in Smithfield Friday night.

David was placed in the Fayette County Prison on $20,000 straight cash bond following his arraignment Wednesday.

A preliminary hearing for David will be held Wednesday before George.
