Police said that a Spartanburg S.C. woman was driving 102 mph in a 45-mph zone on Tuesday, but the woman told said she does not remember speeding.
According to an incident report, 72-year-old Sandra Powell's car was clocked traveling at high speed along Highway 176. The report said that Powell's vehicle was all over the road and almost caused a crash when it passed another vehicle. The report said that Powell's car was eventually stopped at the intersection of Highway 176 and Old Buffalo Road.
The report said that the officer asked Powell if she was alright and she said yes. Powell then told the officer that she was upset because she was late for a hair appointment and that she was aware she was going 100 mph, the report said.
Powell said during an interview with on Wednesday that she does not remember speeding. She said that her salon is actually in Spartanburg, but somehow she got lost and ended up in Union. She said that she does not remember pressing the accelerator, but only that she felt panicked and confused.
A doctor told Powell that she has a kidney infection and that her behavior may be a result of the infection, she said. A Greenville attorney said if a medical professional can testify that Powell suffered from a kidney infection, and her driving behavior was a result of that, than she may have a case.
Powell said that she feels bad for what happened, but that she is glad the officer stopped her before someone got hurt. She said that she did not even realize her car could go that fast.
Powell was charged with reckless driving.
