Study finds big hips 'impair' women's memory
A woman's body shape may influence how good her memory is, according to US researchers. Although carrying excess weight anywhere appears to impair older women's brains, carrying it on the hips may make matters worse, they say. The Northwestern Medicine team found "apple-shaped" women fared better than "pears" on cognitive tests. But depositing fat around the waist increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, experts warn. They said the findings, in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for both body and mind.
Some of the health risks associated with obesity, such as vascular disease and inflammation, may explain why people who are overweight appear to be at higher risk of dementia. However, the latest study suggests a bit of extra fat around the waist may actually protect brain functioning. The researchers believe belly fat makes more of the female hormone oestrogen that naturally dips after the menopause. Oestrogen is thought to help protect the brain from cognitive decline. The study involved 8,745 post-menopausal women aged 65 to 79.
These women were asked to complete a memory test that doctors use to judge brain function. They were also weighed and measured, then scored on an obesity scale known as Body Mass Index or BMI. Over two-thirds of the women were overweight or obese. The researchers found that for every one point increase in a woman's BMI, her memory score dropped by one point. And pear-shaped women - those with smaller waists but bigger hips - scored particularly poorly. The researchers say this is likely to be related to the type of fat deposited around the hips versus the waist. Scientists already know different kinds of fat release different hormones and have varying effects on insulin resistance, lipids and blood pressure.
Lead researcher Dr Diana Kerwin said: "We need to find out if one kind of fat is more detrimental than the other, and how it affects brain function. The fat may contribute to the formation of plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease or a restricted blood flow to the brain." Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "The pear-shape is incredibly common, and while this study doesn't explain fully the link between body shape and brain function, it surely makes the case for watching the scales. There is little we can do about our natural body shape, but a lot we can do about our weight. With so much evidence of the dangers of obesity, we could all do well to consider sensible lifestyle changes to keep our weight in check."
Dead man to get liposuction to fit in coffin
Romania's fattest man Cristian Capatanescu, 54, it is to get a post-mortem liposuction so that half of him can be buried in a regular sized coffin - and the other half cremated.
Capatanescu, pictured here being moved by fireman from his home in Ramnicu Valcea, died of multiple organ failure in a Bucharest hospital bed while waiting for doctors to carry out a stomach reduction surgery to help him lose weight.
Now relatives have asked if it would be possible for doctors to cut away a few bits anyway so that he will fit in a regular sized coffin. Capatanescu's family say that they cannot afford a large sized reinforced coffin and as a result want to incinerate part of his body - and bury the rest in a regular sized coffin.
His wife told local media they would have two funerals - a traditional burial and also a service for the part of him that was cremated.
Mother ordered by Australian court not to breastfeed six-year-old son

A court has ordered a mother not to breastfeed her almost seven-year-old son. During a custody battle over the little boy in a Melbourne court, it was revealed he had complained that the mother wanted him to suckle her breasts during a visit with her last year. The mother denied she had breastfed the child, then five, saying that they were lying down and he wanted to touch her breasts, according to court documents. She allegedly told him that she had breastfed him when he was young.
The court rejected her explanation and restrained the mother from exposing her breasts to the child, requiring him to suckle or permitting him to touch her breasts. The court also ordered that the boy live with his female carer and spend time with his Fijian parents interstate during school holidays. The boy has lived with the carer since 2004, but she says that in 2009 the mother told her they wanted him back, the court was told. The carer's solicitor said yesterday that it was a very rare case in the Federal Magistrates' Court where a person who was not a relative was awarded custody of a child over the biological parents.
"I really can't remember one where a non-parent or relative has been granted custody of someone's else's child," the solicitor said. "This woman had been looking after this little boy for some five years and he had come to look upon her as his mother even though he knew the difference." The boy continued to have contact with his parents. But after staying with his parents for six weeks last year, the carer said the boy told her his mother had hit him with a belt and still wanted him to suckle her breasts.
The court determined that the carer had intended the boy to live with his parents, but became concerned about their care of him. She took him home with her. The carer applied to the court for parenting orders. The parents also sought sole parental responsibility. The federal magistrate decided it was in the child's best interests that he continue to live with his carer. She was confident that the carer would continue to promote the boy's relationship with his parents and his Fijian culture. The parents are living in Australia on bridging visas and it is possible they may be deported.
Girl seeks help through Facebook while being attacked
Desperate to get away from her mother's ex-boyfriend as he attacked her, a 12-year-old South St. Paul girl fought him off and turned to her iPod and Facebook to seek help, authorities said.
Her quick thinking got a message to her mother, who contacted South St. Paul police. Within hours, 42-year-old Raymond Ernest Cesmat was behind bars. The Dakota County Attorney's office charged him Wednesday with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, felonies punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
Cesmat, who has a sizable criminal history, is being held at the Dakota County Jail in Hastings in lieu of $175,000 bail.
The incident unfolded early Saturday morning while the girl's mother was out of the house, according to the criminal complaint. The mom was no longer dating Cesmat but he continued to live with them.
The girl told police that Cesmat had taken away her cell phone away when she went to bed, telling her he did not want her texting all night. He also told her to leave her door open, the complaint said.
She told police she had woken up to find him standing in her room before, and felt that it was about to happen again. "The juvenile stated that she just knew that he would come back to her room later," the complaint state.
He later walked in naked and tried to pull off her pants, she said, but she kicked him away and screamed, according to the complaint. When he left, she got out her iPod and found an acquaintance on the social networking website Facebook.com. She begged her friend to contact her mother and tell her to come pick her up.
As she was sending the message, Cesmat went back to her room and sexually assaulted the girl, the complaint said. She fought back, scratching him hard enough to draw blood. Before he left her room, he allegedly looked at her and said: "I will use you whenever I want."
The complaint states she then pushed her dresser in front of her door, climbed out a window and ran to a payphone to call her mother, who had received the message from the girl's Facebook friend and was already on her way. The two met at a nearby school. When police arrived, the girl was still crying and upset.
Police found Cesmat at home and noticed scratches on his stomach and arms, as well as a bloody cut on his right hand, according to the complaint. He told them his daughter had run away and he had cut his finger looking for her.
They found blood on the girl's dresser and on her bedspread and pillow, as well as her shirt, the complaint said.
Cesmat was arrested but denied sexually assaulting the girl, according to the complaint. He said he he'd spent the night at two bars and at a friend's house and hadn't seen the girl when he arrived home shortly before 5 a.m.
Police located Cesmat's friend, who guessed he'd left her residence closer to 3:15 a.m. A text message on her phone from 3:27 a.m. indicated he had made it home, the complaint said.
His criminal history includes multiple convictions for theft and issuing worthless checks, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a canceled driver's license, according to court records.
Mom of 3 accused of molesting 4 teen male friends of daughter
A secretary for the Village of Chicago Ridge is accused of molesting four of her daughter's 14- and 15-year-old male friends and giving them alcohol and marijuana.
Cathleen M. Miller, 40, of the 5800 block of West 109th Street, is charged with three counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual abuse.
Miller, the mother of three daughters, the oldest of whom is 14, is accused of having sexual intercourse with two of the boys.
She allegedly molested the boys in her home between February and June, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
She remained jailed Wednesday night. Bond was set at $900,000 Tuesday.
Miller is not allowed to have contact with her teen daughter because the teen allegedly witnessed some of the sex acts.
Miller's lawyer, Robert Olson, said the woman denies any wrongdoing and said her daughter's friends brought their own alcohol and drugs to her home.
The alleged sexual abuse came to light several weeks ago after one of the boys wrote an apology to Miller's teen daughter on Facebook, Olson said. The girl had allegedly walked in on them. His parents saw the message and went to police, Olson said.
As police started asking questions, Miller checked herself into a hospital. She was considering suicide, Olson said. A relative of Miller has custody of the teen girl and her 3- and 10-year-old siblings.
Miller recently separated from her husband and got an order of protection against him for herself and their daughters after an alleged encounter June 6 in their home. She claimed a long history of physical and emotional abuse and had consulted Olson about filing for divorce, he said.
Miller said her husband in June had "spit in her face, poured water on her and pushed her to the ground," scraping her left knee, according to court documents.
Miller has worked for the village for at least 20 years, officials said. A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said his office was investigating the family.
JOKE: One Night Stand
A handsome advertising executive attended a party given by a female colleague and left with an extremely attractive guest. In the office the next morning, he thanked the hostess and explained that he really liked her friend.
"Oh, she's not really a friend of mine," the girl responded. "Just an acquaintance. "
"Well, in that case," the man chuckled, "I'm happy to have made your acquaintance."
