Jeremy Wade reeled in the pre-historic looking monster on a fishing expedition to the River Congo.
The goliath tigerfish is one of the most fearsome freshwater fish in the world and are said to be much bigger and deadlier versions of the piranha
It has 32 teeth that are of similar size to those of a great white shark and has been known to attack humans and even crocodiles before.
It has only ever been caught by a handful of fishermen due to the danger it poses and the fact its habitat is notoriously hard to reach.
Mr Wade, from Bath, Somerset, took extra care when reeling in this specimen which weighed more than 100lbs and was 5ft long.
Luckily he is an experienced angler and caught the fish for the TV show River Monsters, which is due to be screened on ITV next month.
The show looks into mythical reports from around the world of humans being attacked by unknown monsters from the deep before Mr Wade sets out to find and catch the suspect.
"This fish is no tench," said Mr Wade.
"It is, for all intents and purposes, a giant piranha. It is quite a beast.
"The teeth on it are incredibly sharp and are about the same length as a great white shark.
"It also has an extremely powerful bite and has been known to consume prey the same size as itself, attack people and take pieces out of crocodiles.
"It is thought that these fish attack in a reflex response to a sudden movement or splash.
"It is very rare to catch one, especially by an outsider because they are found in such a remote and difficult location to get to. There are no guides or lodges on that part of the Congo River."
Mr Wade used a sizable catfish as bait for the tigerfish - Hydrocynus goliath in Latin - and a 200lbs rod and line.

Wheelchair getaway from jewelry store heist goes awry, two "gems" in custody

Two people are in police custody following an unbelievable attempted jewelry store heist near El Paso, Texas. Security camera footage shows 44-year-old Noemi Duchene and 45-year-old Luis Del Castillo arrive outside of Estate & New Jewelry late Tuesday morning with Del Castillo pushing Duchene in her wheelchair.

Duchene then gets out of her chair, covers her head and upper body with a large black trash bag and enters the jewelry store while Del Castillo waits with the chair. Once inside Duchene pulls a kitchen knife and demands "everything".

Store owner Linda Bradely decided not to comply and drew a stun gun in response. "We're chasing each other around like Keystone cops," Bradely recalls. "I knew I could outrun her because she was obviously not very quick."

A store customer eventually tackled Duchene and held her until police arrived. Del Castillo was still waiting outside with the wheelchair and was also arrested. Investigators say the pair live in an apartment across the street from the jewelry store.

Kitten survives five-hour rescue mission after being flushed down toilet

Little Alannah Merleto learned a valuable lesson that some things just shouldn't be flushed down a toilet - like a kitten. It wasn't the first time the mischievous Australian three-year-old had put unusual objects down the loo, but never before had it required eight firemen and a five-hour rescue mission to save the day.

And save the day - and the kitten - they did, reuniting Alannah with a soaking wet and slightly worse for wear kitten. "Kitty cat is back," she said, squeezing the kitten with love as she thanked the fireman.

Mum Ammie Croft called in the cavalry to her Baulkham Hills home after not being able to find the fourth kitten in a newly-born litter. "I asked Alannah if she knew where he was and she said 'down the toilet'," Ms Crofts said. "I didn't believe it could be true. I thought, 'she can't have put the kitten down the toilet'." A whimper from the pipes confirmed her fears.

Complete with rescue equipment used in the 1989 Newcastle earthquake disaster, the NSW Fire Brigade arrived and began their quest. They pulled apart the toilet, and weaved a camera down the pipe. "He was just sitting in the pipe, crying a bit," Inspector Tim Fox said. A prodding device covered with rags was used to push the kitten 10m to a pipe access point where an officer plucked it to safety.

Dog adopts tiny kitten and won't let it out of her sight

A "meow" outside the door of an Atlanta home has turned into a labor of love for a dog.

Camille and Mari Ryan Heschmeyer say their dog, Ellie, has taken "ownership" of a little kitten they found abandoned outside their home last week.

Although she has never had puppies, Ellie has become very much a mother to this baby feline.

"It's been a very interesting situation." says Mari Ryan Heschmeyer, one of Ellie's owners. "We didn't expect more than a little curiosity and scooping up. [She said] thank you very much, it's mine now."

Secret life of cross-dressing killer colonel revealed

The disgraced cross-dressing commander of Canada's largest air force base pleaded guilty on Monday to 86 lurid sex crimes, including two murders that "stunned" the military.

Colonel Russell Williams, 47, a married pilot who once flew the jet used to ferry Canada's prime minister as well as the British royal family on a visit, displayed no emotion as he admitted to his crimes in a courtroom in Belleville, Ontario.

He faces life in prison, with no possibility of parole for at least 25 years.

One victim's brother, Andy Lloyd, said it was "overwhelming" seeing the evidence presented in court, including hundreds of photographs of Williams wearing stolen undergarments in his victims' bedrooms and masturbating.

"I thought it was disgusting," he said. "These were terrible, terrible acts.

"It makes me, as a Canadian and as a regular human being, angry."

Canada's chief of defence staff, General Walt Natynczyk, said Williams's crimes "stunned all Canadians and none more so than the members of the Canadian Forces".

Williams was a rising star who was being groomed for top leadership roles in the military.

As the commander of 8-Wing/Canadian Forces Base Trenton, he oversaw relief flights to quake-stricken Haiti, the repatriation of dead soldiers from Afghanistan, and Arctic search and rescue missions.

His "guilty plea is the first step in a healing process that will no doubt take many years", said General Natynczyk.

Williams commanded Canada's busiest air force base, the 437 Squadron in Trenton, east of Toronto, for more than a year before his arrest. Previously he was in charge of Canada's secretive Camp Mirage in Dubai.

Police arrested Williams in February for the disappearance and death of 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd, last heard from the previous month. He was caught when his vehicle's tyre treads were matched at a police roadside checkpoint to tracks at the crime scene.

Williams was later charged with the murder of Marie Comeau, a female corporal under his command at the Trenton military base in November last year.

Both women were asphyxiated.

He was also charged with two home invasions in which two women were confined and sexually assaulted.

He was also charged with an additional 82 counts of break-and-enter and attempted break-and-enter in Ottawa, Belleville and Tweed.

A stash of women's undergarments taken by police from Williams's residence were linked to burglaries near his home and job.

An agreed statement of facts read out in the Ontario Superior Court traced the escalation of his offences starting in September 2007.

"Given the seriousness of charges, it's important for the court to have a full account of the facts," said prosecutor Lee Burgess. "These facts will be extremely disturbing."

The stolen lingerie was meticulously categorised and stored in bags and boxes discovered at his Ottawa home, which he shared with his wife of 19 years. The court heard that he periodically disposed of the loot when he had accumulated too much.

His criminal fetish escalated in late 2009 when he attacked his first victim, waking her from a deep slumber, tying and blindfolding her, and then snapping a half-dozen photographs of her semi-naked in her home.

He would later recount the assault in a two-page document saved on his computer.

Williams was expressionless and dressed in a sombre dark suit and grey button-down shirt, and he kept his head down as the charges were read.

The list of charges was so long it took nearly 40 minutes to read it into the record.

Williams responded to each charge: "Guilty, your honour."

The court heard that only 17 homeowners had reported their homes had been broken into, while Williams's other burglaries went undetected prior to his arrest and confession to police.

Most of the break-ins occurred at night, and at least once while he wore his military uniform. In a few cases, he left short messages, such as "seen better".

Angela McCanny, whose Ottawa home was broken into on consecutive days in 2008, said all the women's underwear in the house were stolen.

Anne Marsan-Cook, whose Belleville home was broken into on consecutive days in 2009, said her sex toys and all her underwear were taken. She also said a chilling message was left on her computer: "Go ahead, call the police. I want to tell the judge about your really big dildos.

"I was one of the lucky ones," she said.

The Ottawa Citizen cited police sources as saying police seized 500 women's undergarments from Williams's Ottawa home.

Court documents allege Williams broke into Comeau's home days before he killed her. Another alleges Williams twice returned to the home of one of his victims to steal items after he sexually assaulted her.

"He's just a very twisted individual; there's no two ways about it," said retired lieutenant-general Angus Watt, who once promoted Williams.

"He was able to lead an elaborate double life and was able to keep it successfully concealed. This was the act of a depraved individual and really has no reflection on the men and women of the Canadian Forces."

While in prison, he attempted suicide and held a hunger strike, but co-operated fully with investigators.

Man's 33-year earache mystery solved after doctors pull tooth from his ear

A Sheffield England man who endured decades of painful earache and infections says his suffering is finally behind him - after doctors extracted a tooth from his ear canal. Stephen Hirst, aged 47, of Torksey Road, Shiregreen, first complained of piercing pains in his right ear as a teenager, and since then has attended countless hospital appointments in an attempt to discover the bizarre cause of his mystery condition. Stephen said the pain was sometimes so excruciating he would be left "screaming" in agony, until determined staff at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital discovered the tooth embedded in his ear. "It's a mystery how it got there," said the former miner, originally from Ward Green, Barnsley.

"I would think it's a first tooth, looking at it, because it can't be big enough to be an adult tooth. I think it's a bottom tooth, one of the front incisors." He said medics at the Royal Hallamshire were "determined to get to the bottom" of the cause of his earache. "The nurse put a suction tube in my ear and cleaned it, then had a go with a microscope probe. Finally she used some tweezers and got it out. She didn't say anything at first. Then she asked me: 'Have you lost any teeth lately?' I said I'd not had any teeth in my head for years. She just said she couldn't believe what had happened, and showed me it.

"She said in 20 years she's never seen anything like it." Stephen said his earache has now cleared up completely. "It's absolutely brilliant," he said. Stephen said he was plagued by earache since he was around 14, and was forced to stuff cotton wool into his right ear to combat his infections. "I used to use a lot of cotton buds and cotton wool, and was prescribed antibiotics," he said. "When I was younger I used to just sit and bang my head on the wall because it hurt that much. I would be screaming - that's not exaggerating.

"I went again and again to the ear, nose and throat clinic. I can hardly hear anything in my right ear, the eardrum has disintegrated." Stephen said he has a number of theories as to how the tooth could have lodged itself in his ear canal. "At school we had wooden desks with lids, and one day I was swinging between two of them. I fell between them and smashed the back of my ear - it might have happened then. Once I also fell and broke my two front teeth, or maybe I pushed it in when I was a kid or something. I am intrigued as to how it got there."
