Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., died in a motorcycle crash on Saturday after losing control of his bike and going head-first over the handlebars. He was "participating in a motorcycle helmet protest ride."
Contos was riding with American Bikers Aimed Towards Education, a motorcycle lobbying group that disagrees with mandatory helmet laws, on Route 11 near Syracuse, when he fishtailed and crashed. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Evidence indicates that Contos "would have survived if he had been wearing a Department of Transportation approved helmet," cops say.
